DANNY is a retired Golden Gloves heavyweight boxer from the Bronx, a professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and a Restorative Justice Coordinator at some of NYC’s toughest schools. The world of recovery coaching has been a perfect match for Danny’s unique skillset and life experiences to give back when he is not teaching. Having witnessed the effects of generational trauma on his own family, he has dedicated his adult life to ending this cycle of abuse, alcoholism and addiction. Eight years sober in recovery, he now sponsors and mentors others struggling to break the same cycle. His time in Al-Anon, Alcoholics Anonymous and S programs has taught him to be present with the pain so that it no longer subverts his creative energies. Two plus decades of experience with Trauma Therapy, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy laid an important foundation for the spiritual lessons he learned in 12-step recovery. As a Yoga instructor and Meditation Facilitator, he lives by the creed that “we attack our disease from all angles.” Since 2005, Danny has worked with the NYC Department of Education as a Leadership Mentor/Trainer with at-risk and special education students. He has used boxing, poetry and spoken word as tools to tap into the multiple intelligences of students struggling with conventional forms of learning. Having worked with gang members and other marginalized youth populations in the Bronx and internationally, Danny achieved fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and Cape Verdean Kriolu. He also has working knowledge of French. In 2010, he trained as a Life Foods chef and nutritionist in the mountains of Chefchaouen, Morocco. In 2013, he continued his nutritional studies in Sedona, Arizona. He has helped hundreds of families organize themselves to better prevent the onset of diabetes, heart disease and other preventable illnesses. Danny has over twenty years of experience as a boxer and has been training fighters in New York City since 2005. At 6’6” 250 pounds, Shaw also has extensive experience as a bouncer and body guard. As a guest speaker at international conferences and NYC auditoriums, Danny Shaw always brings it back to the basics: “Easy does it. One day at a time. Always lead with the heart.” A Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) and trained in Trauma-Informed Care.
