How It Works
Although they may have agreed to pursue help often they are still unmedicated or still using drugs and alcohol and therefore not able to stay safe or make the best decisions for themselves.
Sometimes they are already detoxing on their own and in a very fragile, volatile state, both physically and emotionally. Old habits die hard and often there is one more hooray on the way to treatment that could potentially close the window of opportunity and lead into a prolonged relapse. To be able to gather resources, plan for the coming month(s), wrap up loose ends at home, put together travel logistics, make flights or transportation all while staying sober or sane enough, is a risk some individuals and families do not want to take.
Due to these circumstances, a trained, professional coach can escort the loved one from their location to the treatment program, providing safety and ensuring arrival. This could be the loved one’s first contact with a coach, and often when they exit the inpatient program they will want to work with the coach again as they have already passed through a pivotal emotional moment in their recovery journey together.
Other individuals will request sober transport when going to triggering events, such as tours, speaking engagements, charities, formal dinners, business meetings out of town where they will be alone in a hotel, family vacations, working on a film set, and any activity or event where they could be isolated, triggered and in danger of returning to old behaviors, using or abandoning vital self-care routines.

- Sober transport is trained to blend in, remain vigilant, available, and connected to the individual. Often just having this support is a helpful reminder to the individual to stay their course.
- The activity or event is difficult enough and having the extra support in a confidential, discreet and sensitive way enables them to be more present and perform at their best.
- It is also a reassurance to the treatment team and family in the event that there is a crisis or challenging episode so as not to derail hard work and long-term recovery.
