Two sides. One healing journey.
SOHL was built by a companion who lived the work for a decade — and a psychiatrist who brings the clinical depth that no other companioning company has.
The "H" in SOHL stands for Human. We believe in the power of human connection to heal the soul.

Andrew Dits
"I got sober in 2009 in Los Angeles. I ended up in six different 12-step programs — they used to say in LA that if you're not in five, you're in denial. I was in six. That's how I got into this work."
"I started picking people up, taking them to meetings, doing it for free. Community service. And it saved my life. Then someone said — hey, there's this kid who just got pulled out of Peru on an acid trip, and we need someone to live with him in a motel. That was my first companioning job."
"For nearly two decades, I've worked in-home with clients across the whole spectrum — in-home care, interventions, case management, companioning, and Spanish-language interpretation. I've lived with people for 90 days at a time. I've sat with 25+ years of my own therapy, across more than twenty therapists. The therapeutic relationship is the work."
"What I saw, over and over, was that the companies I worked for were staffing agencies. They'd send me in with no supervision, no clinical team, no support. So I built SOHL to be the company I wished I'd worked for."

Dr. Yesenia Almaguer
"I went to medical school, did my residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine, in New York City — one of the most visited emergency rooms in the nation for addiction and mental health — and then specialized in psychiatry with a subspecialty in addiction. That's 13 years of training after high school."
"My training in New York City was in mobile crisis — going into people's homes when no one knew what was on the other side of the door. Active psychosis. Overdose in progress. Families in pieces. Every call was different, and you learn to walk in steady and meet whatever's there. That's the same thing I bring to an intervention now: I've seen enough that nothing throws me — which means the family doesn't have to carry that weight alone."
"I'm originally from Mexico. I'm bilingual, and I maintain a pro bono practice with families at the border where mental healthcare is stigmatized or simply not available."
"When Andrew and I started SOHL, the thing that was obvious to both of us was that no companioning company had real clinical oversight. That's what I bring. I'm not a figurehead. I'm on daily rounds. I review every active case. Every companion in our company has a psychiatrist behind them — and that psychiatrist is me."

A psychiatrist stands behind every companion.
Most companioning companies are staffing agencies. They send people into your home with no clinical supervision, no case review, no psychiatric accountability. That's the industry norm — and it's the thing we set out to change.
Dr. Almaguer is on daily rounds reviewing every active SOHL case. Every companion knows there is a licensed general and addiction psychiatrist standing behind them — not as a consultant on retainer, but as an active member of the care team. When something changes in the field, it gets escalated to her the same day.
That's what separates SOHL from staffing-agency companioning. The person in your home is trained, background-checked, insured, and supported. And the clinical judgment behind every decision is a real psychiatrist's, not a coordinator's.
The people holding it together.
Behind Andrew and Dr. Almaguer is a small team that runs the machinery of the work — so the clinical side can stay focused on the person.
How we think about this work.
Connection first
Everything we do runs through relationship. The training matters, the credentials matter, but the thing that actually changes people is the quality of the connection.
Collaboration, not competition
This crisis is bigger than any one company. We work with every provider in the system. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and refer you to someone who is.
The family is the family
One of the most destructive things that happens is that the parents become case managers. They stop being parents. We take that job so they don't have to carry it anymore.
We work ourselves out of a job
Our goal is to build enough scaffolding into a person's life that they don't need us anymore. The whole point is graduation.
300+ team members nationwide.
Every companion in our network is carefully selected, certified (CCAR & NY Board approved CARC), trained in trauma-informed care, family systems, and attachment styles, and clinically supervised by our team.
